College Drives

H: drive

When you have an account set up you should have space on the H: drive, this is your personal space on the network drive and should be accessible from any computer which is on the college network. It is not backed up, so it is your responsibility to keep your own back-ups. Please note that all staff can read your H: drive.

C: or D: drive

This is the local hard-disk, at home most of your work will be stored in one of these. Remember to make a back-up. Do not store stuff on the local hard drive of college computers.

S: drive

The S: drive is a shared drive, members of staff have read and write permission here but students generally only have read permission.

CD: Drive

These allow you to read and possibly write to CDs.

CDs themselves can be Read Only, Write once or re-writable. (designated with either an RAM, R, or RW ).

DVD: Drive

These allow you to read and possibly write to both CDs and DVDs.

DVDs come in two formats, DVD+ and DVD-, most systems these days allow you to use both kinds of disc.

USB pen drive

The easiest way to transfer files between two computers is to use a USB pen drive. It is also the easiest thing to lose, so be sure to make a back-up. It is also a good idea to create a readme.txt file with contact details so there is some hope of it being returned if you lose it.

External Hard Drive

These normally plug into a USB port and are great for taking back-ups.
